Heavenly Lodging in Seward Alaska

Alaska Railroad Train service to Seward

Alaska Railroad, is a historic way to travel in Alaska but NOT what you are used to when you think of train service!! There is railroad service to Seward, Whittier, and Fairbanks during summer months, and Fairbanks in the winter. There is typically one train a day, per location during the summer, and one per week to some locations in the winter.   Because the Seward Highway is a National Scenic Byway, we recommend taking the train north from Anchorage, OR south from Fairbanks, as a way to explore the Interior.  It's a great way to visit Denali and Fairbanks.  If you do train to Seward be prepared for logistical issues and higher car rental fees, or the need to partake in taxis, to see some of the most important sites.

Be sure to give yourself time to experience some heavenly relaxation in these our special cabins with spectacular wildlife and scenery surrounding them, just south of Seward, Alaska, on the shores of Resurrection Bay, on the Kenai Peninsula.

  • A historic way to travel in Alaska and still the method of much cargo transport, and travel to the interior year round
  • Alaska train service and schedule is unlike what you may be used to
    • There is one train a day to and from Seward
    • Seasonally only, from mid/late-May to mid-September
      • Departs Anchorage 6:45am, arrives Seward about 11:15 a.m.
      • Departs Seward 6:00 p.m., arrives Anchorage 10:15p.m.
      • There are sometimes "seasonal" trains such as the Christmas train, however to date these are one-day round-trip excursions
  • If you have your heart set on riding the train, consider taking the train to Denali and/or Fairbanks, since we recommend driving the Seward Highway it is one of the MOST BEAUTIFUL roads in the world!
  • One way travel with the train will require renting a car or taking some other form of transportation for your return (bus, ferry, etc.), often a more costly solution than a rental car from Anchorage.
  • Arrival times in Seward mean you have several hours with luggage before you can get into most lodging.  On your day of departure you'll have most of the day with luggage after you've checked out of your lodging. Without a car you're limited to taxi or shuttles. If you are staying with us, and will be arriving by train into Seward, please be sure to let us know so we may help with your logistics!
  • You can rent a car for use just in the Seward area if you want to do the train round trip, or if you are taking a cruise ship and just need the train for one way. See our page on Rental Cars for more info on the local car rental option.
  • Visit the Alaska Railroad website for rates and more information about the train

There are so many things to do in Seward, Alaska and the surrounding area, from simple wildlife watching and hiking to boat tours into the Kenai Fjords National Park to see glaciers and wildlife, that we encourage you to stay at least 3 nights so that you can take advantage of the numerous activities that make Seward such a special place to visit.  The mountains surrounding Resurrection Bay provide spectacular scenery and they are alive with wildlife, as is the bay itself.  The wildlife of the area includes bald eagles, bear (both black and brown), mountain goats, dall sheep, sea lions, dall porpoise, harbor seal, sea otters, humpback whales, sea birds & ducks too numerous to list! Seward itself is a charming town with two distinct areas of enjoyment.  Downtown Seward offers a number of special businesses.  The Seward Small Boat Harbor is a delightful place to walk around on a nice day (with an ice cream cone from the Harbor Creamery, if you like!), and the Alaska SeaLife Center and Seward Museum, or any of several coffee shops, are perfect places to spend a rainy afternoon. Since all of our waterfront lodging accommodations (cabins, view rooms) have kitchenettes, you won't have to eat all your meals out, but when you want to, there are a number of excellent restaurants in Seward Alaska. If you've never stayed in a small "ma & pa" accommodation, or if you normally stay in a hotel or motel, or bed and breakfast, you'll want to come stay with us and experience something special! We'd love to have you as our guests; we'll do everything we can to make sure you have a comfortable stay!
