Alaska Vacation Planning Assistance

Planning an Alaska Vacation can be a huge challenge! Let us help you with our "Alaska Vacation Planning" assistance - This section of our website is new with the 2010 season.  We want our guests to have the best time possible on their Alaska vacation, and offer unique "insider" knowledge about our State. Our State is huge, with numerous different regions.  Public transportation is nothing like what you are used to. Our roads are mostly 2 lanes, some are unpaved. Our towns are small, some can only be reached by ferry, or plane.  There are places where it's best to have a vehicle; others where it's best not....Although there are plenty of books available, one problem with tour books is that they are out of date the moment they hit the shelves. We are assembling this section of our website to help our customers find answers to the questions they have, and to assist them in designing the Alaska vacation of their dreams. Please consider this section "Under Development" at this time; don't hesitate to ask for our assistance, or make a suggestion as to what information to include to make this most helpful. Send us an email with your questions, or what you want to do and see, and we'll help you figure out a great itinerary!

 The Challenges of Alaska Travel

When planning your Alaska vacation, it's easy to forget how large our State is.  If you were to super-impose the State of Alaska on top of a map of the 48 State, you would see that Alaska stretches from California to Florida and from Michigan to Texas.

Although our state is HUGE, it only contains a population of about 650,000 people.

    • Our roads are almost all 2 lane undivided highways
    • Our "public transportation" is not what you are used to (1 train or bus a day (if that))
    • There is a limited number of "nice" places in any given town, far fewer than the number of our summer visitors
    • Car rental agencies are few and far between except in the largest of cities (Anchorage)
    • Hefty one-way drop off fees on rental cars is very common
    • It's easy to mis-judge distances and driving times

Suggested Itineraries

We are focusing our first suggestions on the most easily accessible areas of Alaska, the South Central and Interior sections.  As time allows we will be embellishing this information.  If you see an itinerary that is of interest to you, we will help you fine tune it to meet your specific needs.

These are very "rough" suggestions, just intended to be an overview.  Please be sure to visit our Alaska Travel Info (Getting Aroung) section for information on the various methods of travel.

The Regions of Alaska

The State of Alaska is generally divided into 5 regions:

  • South Central Alaska
    • the most populated region, includes the largest city, Anchorage and provides access to an amazing playground of ocean, rivers, streams, mountains, lakes. Easily reached by plane. This is the section we are located in, and focus most of our recommendations in.
  • Interior Alaska
    • includes Denali National Park and North America's tallest peak, Mt. McKinley. This region features warm weather in the summer, and can be rather buggy; Fairbanks is located in this region. This is the second region we focus our recommendations in.

  • Inside Passage
    • home of the State Capitol, Juneau, this region is reached most easily by cruise ship
  • Western Alaska
    • Kodiak Island and the Aleutian Islands make up this section of Alaska; requires ferry or plane service
  • Northern Alaska
    • populated by only a few thousand people this region make up about 1/3 of the State. Above the Arctic Circle, summers are 84 days of sunlight; winters are 84 days of total darkness.

There are so many things to do in Seward, Alaska and the surrounding area, from simple wildlife watching and hiking to boat tours into the Kenai Fjords National Park to see glaciers and wildlife, that we encourage you to stay at least 3 nights so that you can take advantage of the numerous activities that make Seward such a special place to visit.  The mountains surrounding Resurrection Bay provide spectacular scenery and they are alive with wildlife, as is the bay itself.  The wildlife of the area includes bald eagles, bear (both black and brown), mountain goats, dall sheep, sea lions, dall porpoise, harbor seal, sea otters, humpback whales, sea birds & ducks too numerous to list! Seward itself is a charming town with two distinct areas of enjoyment.  Downtown Seward offers a number of special businesses.  The Seward Small Boat Harbor is a delightful place to walk around on a nice day (with an ice cream cone from the Harbor Creamery, if you like!), and the Alaska SeaLife Center and Seward Museum, or any of several coffee shops, are perfect places to spend a rainy afternoon. Since all of our waterfront lodging accommodations (cabins, view rooms) have kitchenettes, you won't have to eat all your meals out, but when you want to, there are a number of excellent restaurants in Seward Alaska. If you've never stayed in a small "ma & pa" accommodation, or if you normally stay in a hotel or motel, or bed and breakfast, you'll want to come stay with us and experience something special! We'd love to have you as our guests; we'll do everything we can to make sure you have a comfortable stay!
